The Jesera vineyard was planted in 1982 (meaning “little lake” in Slovenian), and is located within the Collio DOC and is a perfect location to create a traditional style of Pinot Grigio. The skins of Pinot Grigio are a gray, berry color, and with just a short maceration on the skins, creates a wonderful copper hue and richer character. Our Pinot Grigio was harvested from Jesera by hand, de-stemmed and the must was left on the skins for 4-8 hours in the press. To add further character, 10% of the must fermented and aged on the lees for 6 months in 20-27 hl barrels, while the remainder was fermented and aged in stainless steel.

The nose holds an intriguing bouquet that ranges from jasmine, acacia, ginger and pink pepper. All of these flavors combine on a very lively, mineral palate that is fresh, intense and rich. This is potentially one of the most complex Pinot Grigios you will have ever experienced. The wine is beautiful now with spring vegetable risotto or grilled fish and will continue to age for another 10 years.

Press Notes:

The 2020 vintage has just been bottled and therefore not yet reviewed. Please find this latest review of the 2019 vintage from Eric Guido at Vinous Media: “The 2019 Pinot Grigio Jesera has a pretty pink color with copper hues strewn throughout. It’s wonderfully fresh and lifted, showing white strawberry, apple, a dusting of confectioners’ sugar and hints of candied ginger. Silky textures flesh out across the senses, weightier than expected yet perfectly balanced by brisk acids, taking on a more savory persona, as notes of peach and melon give way to zesty exotic spices. There’s an almost-Asian peppery note here coupled with the wine’s inner florals that excites the senses. The Jesera really makes the case for skin-contact Pinot Grigio and will appeal to a broad range of palates.” - 92 points
