The 2014 vintage could be summed up in one word - unexpected. 2014 at the time was not a heralded vintage but over the last 6 years, the quality of the wines have outshined even our greatest potential expectations. The vintage started with a cool, wet winter, which created a very long and slow vegetative cycle. The summers were quite rainy which gave us the task of limited rot and only focusing on the best clusters. As harvest approached, we dropped about 25% of our fruit, to give more concentration to the best vines, allowing them more time for perfect maturation. The quantity of 2014 was much smaller, but the grapes were of high quality. We decided not to make a Riserva in 2014, instead putting our best grapes into Tre Vigne and our Il Sogno bottling. This decision produced a beautifully structured Tre Vigne that will continue to develop with long aging.
The 2014 is yet to be reviewed. Please find this review of the previous vintage, 2013 – 94 Points, James Suckling – “Delicious, glazed red cherries, creme de cassis, boysenberries, dried oregano and pine cones here. The full-bodied palate has a chiseled feel, where the tannins are very tightly strung, holding vibrant red and blue fruit, and the finish is long and savory. Drink from 2023.”
