Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG Riserva

Badia a Corte is the flagship wine of the estate that serves as the pinnacle of quality and potential for Sangiovese in our area. Named for the single vineyard in which it is sourced, the vines are planted in the famed Alberese soils of the Florentine hillsides. These limestone-based soils add striking minerality and intensity to the final wine that are balanced by the floral and herbaceous notes of 100% Sangiovese. The vineyard sits at 350 meters above sea level and is managed by hand, with each vine curated to produce grapes that are concentrated and transmit the exemplary terroir. Once harvested, the clusters are sorted so that only the very best berries make it into Badia a Corte. Maceration lasts for two weeks in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats to maintain freshness and aromatics before aging in large 25hl Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months.

The 2017 vintage in Chianti was one that brought many challenges in the vineyard but a vintage of very high quality. Coming off of two exceptional vintages, 2017 was one of the hottest and driest on record. This lack of water and consequential stress on the vines forced our team to focus on selecting the very best clusters to ensure the nutrients of the soil were not spread too thin. As summer came, the heat enveloped the vineyard, giving further necessity to have a full, but aerated canopy to protect the grapes from sunburn. The result was a vintage that gained incredibly powerful ripeness and intensity without any sun-scorched grapes. The high temperatures continued through the harvest season, so both fruit concentration and tannic structure were quite pronounced. 2017 was a very small vintage in quantity; however, the quality is fantastic, a bold vintage that, especially for the Badia a Corte Riserva, will have incredible aging potential.

The 2017 vintage has not been released, thus has not been reviewed by American wine journalists. This vintage did just receive Due Biccheri (two glasses) from Gambero Rosso.
