65% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc
2016 was a very small vintage for this wine, with only 2,500 bottles produced. Grapes from the Montebello vineyard that go into Picconero are identified first in the vineyard, as being of great quality and intense concentration. Upon arrival in the winery, the grape bunches pass through both optical and hand sorting, then are destemmed, with the whole berries put into 100% French oak for fermentation. The juice stays on the skins for 30 days, giving maximum extraction and tannic structure to the wine while frequent pigeage (punch-downs) and remontage (pump-over) give consistent skin contact throughout the whole tank. Picconero sees 18 months aging in barrique and at least 12 months in bottle. However, with each vintage we wait to release until the perfect moment that will showcase the wine’s intensity and balance.

This is a beautiful wine from the folks at Tolaini, and one of the finest bottles made by this dynamic estate so far. A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Picconero Tenuta Montebello shows depth and width, pushing its intensity and fruit-forward style in all directions. The wine is indeed expansive and rich with pressed blackberry, plum and dried rose. There are earthy tones as well and a touch of garden mint. This wine is a true achievement.
