Our fruit from this historic vineyard sits on a 0.75ha plot in the southern part of the appellation, at the corner of the wall separating Echézeaux and Clos-Vougeot. Originally planted in 1948, it is a unique planting of 200-meter rows on three different soil types – stony with a heavy limestone-clay ratio, small stones with a high proportion of clay, and a finer soil with clay/silt deposits. This diversity of terroirs gives a rich and dense wine, much closer to the finesse of Vosne-Romanée than the power of more northern plantings of Clos Vougeot. We refer to this as “the round cuvée” as it absorbs all the soil types found in the appellation.

The grapes are all hand-harvested with ~40% whole cluster fermentation. Our house style has always been to intervene in the process as little as possible over the course of the 3-week fermentation cycle. The finished wine is then aged in 50% new barrels between 18 to 22 months.

Press Notes :

92-94 Points, Neal Martin, Vinous Media: “From the southern side of the clos, the 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru includes 40% whole bunch from the parcel planted in 1944. The bouquet is tightly wound at first, opening to reveal blackberry, briary, cedar and light loamy aromas. The palate is nicely structured with firm grip, touches of black pepper and blood orange infusing the mainly black fruit. The finish just needs to manifest a little more finesse, and that might happen during the remainder of barrel maturation, of course.”
