Nero Ossidiana is a testament to how we’ve championed indigenous grapes, showcasing the balance between the bright acidity and elegance of the grape Corinto Nero and the round, rich character of Nero d’Avola. The wine takes its name from the volcanic glass that arises from the rapid cooling of the obsidian lava flow. Corinto Nero, which is the dominant grape in this blend, is a seedless red variety that I rediscovered and relaunched after a massale selection started in 2005. It produces wines of great acidity that are very rich in fruit and spice. Fans of Pinot Noir and Grenache will embrace Corinto. Dark fruited and peppery, it is reminiscent of Syrah, with a polished mouthfeel. It is made in the traditional method with whole bunches, no temperature control, and no fining.

Press Notes :

93 points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate – “A blend of 90% Corinto Nero and 10% Nero d'Avola, the Tenuta di Castellaro 2018 Nero Ossidiana is fermented in stainless steel but finishes its malolactic fermentation in large oak casks to impart extra textural softness and fiber. Some 8,000 bottles were produced in this vintage, and organically farmed vines are planted in sandy volcanic soils that are rich in minerals. This wine is fragrant and pure with dried lilac and rose petal. This vintage offers some sweet cherry fruit to the palate followed by crisp acidity. That freshness would cut through a classic lasagna al forno. This wine is named after the glass-like black lava rocks, obsidian, that absorb so much heat and sunshine throughout the growing season.” – Monica Larner
