Named after Pliny the Elder’s magnum opus, “Naturalis Historia,” this wine is the ultimate expression of the rich, volcanic Irpinian terroir. Sourced from a single vineyard, Mirabella Eclano, known for its high-quality potential from a plot of old vines. This 100% is a culmination of our winery’s comprehensive research into clonal selection, rootstocks, and site selection when crafting our Taurasi wines.
Aglianico grapes for Naturalis Historia Taurasi are grown on vineyards that are South-West facing. Deep and sandy loam soils include traces of limestone, clay and some volcanic matter, and is well-draining. The vineyard sits at 400 meters above sea level and has an average vine age of 50 years. After being hand-harvested at the end of October, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel and completed a long, slow maceration. The wine is then transferred to French oak barriques for 24 months and aged in bottle for at least 30 months. We release this vintage to you 10 years after the harvest to show the wine still holds youth and vibrancy and has the aging potential for another 40 years.
93 points, Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast Magazine: “Aromas of scorched earth, new leather, underbrush and a whiff of oak lead the nose. The firm palate shows prune, mature blackberry, cocoa and clove set against tight, fine-grained tannins that still need a few more years to unwind. Drink 2021-2031.”
