This very special cuvée was named in honour of Professor Émile Peynaud, who taught our family and team at Daumas Gassac how to truly showcase the beautiful and unique terroir of the Gassac Valley. The birthplace of this wine was discovered by our enologist Henry Enjalbert over forty years ago. He noted a truly special plot in our vineyard that was the poorest, most stony and arid where the vines would struggle and send their roots deep down. Here we planted pure un-cloned Cabernet Sauvignon vines with an eye toward producing exceptional grapes with great finesse and complexity. After a long, slow fermentation, the wine ages for 24 months in oak barrels - 12 months in new wood and 12 months in one and two year old wood. The wine is then bottled without fining or filtration and only released when ready.

This 2015 vintage is only the fifth Cuvée Émile Peynaud to be born in 40 years and the last vintage to be overseen by our founder-winemaker Aimé Guibert. Less than 1700 bottles and 200 magnums were produced. This is a quintessential wine with the characteristics of the Mas de Daumas Gassac Grands Vins – dark ruby red, powerful density, marked by the deep power of aromas so original to the Mas de Daumas Gassac terroir. The Cuvée Émile Peynaud is an expression of love and gratitude, a wine symbolic of times past, and is often regarded as the most iconic red wine produced in the Languedoc region.
