The old terraced vineyards of Berg Kaisersteinfels are located 280 meters above sea-level nestled at the summits of the Taunus mountains. Here, the soil contains a combination of red clay slate with mixed-in quartzite. The red color is a result of the iron content of these slates that have been oxidized to iron oxide under an arid climate, leaving a very rocky, hard soil. It has less minerals than the rich soils of gray slate, but still much more than the quartzite soils. Some of the vines are up to 80 years old.
This vineyard site typically ripens last and is the wine with the most tension of all of our GGs. It is vinified and aged in 1200L neutral German oak casks before bottling.

Press Notes :

98 points, James Suckling – “Breathtakingly fine and filigree with delicate floral aromas. The amazing thing is the way the enormous concentration gives this almost no weight at all. Then comes the gigantically mineral finish that’s got staggering intensity for just 12.5% alcohol. Drink or hold.” – Stuart Pigott
