Saint Joseph is a spectacular Lieu-Dit (named vineyard) in the Northern Rhône village of Saint-Joseph - in fact it is the vineyard site that created the Saint-Joseph AOC. The plot is situated in the heights of the Tournon-sur-Rhône at 250 meters above sea level. The soils at this site, mostly comprised of decomposed granite, add incredible complexity and tension to the final wine. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before entering the winery for processing. Each cluster is de-stemmed and macerated in concrete vats for approximately four weeks. The wine sees deep extraction by frequent pumpovers, pulling the intense floral, spicy notes of Syrah out of the skins. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged in French oak barrels (10% new) for 12-14 months before bottling. This wine is consistently intense on the nose, with deep black fruits and a structure that is powerful, yet balanced – all perfect for approachability in youth and great for longer cellaring.

“I love this vineyard as well as this wine from Ferraton. The 2018 Saint Joseph Lieu-Dit Saint Joseph has a big, rich, powerful bouquet of blackcurrants, chocolate, cured meats, tapenade, and a touch of flowers. These carry to a full-bodied, opulent Saint Joseph with loads of dark, meaty fruits, ripe, present tannins, lots of power, and yet a light, graceful texture. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following decade.”
