Gigondas has always represented wines that overdeliver with boldness and concentration at reasonable prices. This area is located in the farthest east of the Rhône with vineyard soils that are quite in contrast to Châteauneuf. Here the vines are planted in soils of limestone and marl, with more sandy deposits. This creates a balance of concentration and minerality that is quite distinctive in Gigondas.

2020 is a vintage of elegance and purity, one that is already showing incredible fruit and drinkability. This elegance was driven by the large amounts of rain we received in late 2019, giving excellent nutrients to the soils and creating water reserves to feed the vines through what became a very dry, hot summer. The heat helped the vines in 2020, as the grapes were approaching potentially high alcohol levels, the summer sun caused the vines to shut down, eventually balancing the alcohols. The harvest was long and successful, with picking able to be executed at optimal times for each vineyard and grape variety. 2020 is a great contrast in style to 2019 with more ripeness and roundness, less tannic structure. It is a vintage with its own fantastic potential.

The 2020 vintage of our Gigondas consisted of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, with vinification completed in large concrete vats utilizing frequent pumpovers and punchdowns to increase extraction. A long maceration period of 3-4 weeks further adds to the richness and fruit-forward structure of the wine. Aging occurs in French oak foudres for 12-15 months before bottling. Gigondas is bold and approachable in its youth with further aging potential of up to 7-10 years.

Press Notes :

91 points, Jeb Dunnuck – “This Northern Rhône team has turned out a terrific 2020 Gigondas Les Murailles based on 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. Pretty red and blue fruits, garrigue, sandalwood, and spice all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium-bodied, balanced, and offers loads of character.”
