Sancerre Rouge, produced from 100% Pinot Noir, is a wine that is a hidden gem of our region, not well-known outside of local appreciation and ardent collectors and sommeliers. Les Baronnes is the quintessential example of the silkiness of red Sancerre, created from vines planted in chalky-clay soils. These soils express a finesse and aromatic richness in the resulting wine and allows the natural flavors of Pinot Noir to shine. This wine is about freshness and vibrancy, meant to be enjoyed young and up to 10 years after release.
2016 is one of the best vintages in the Loire Valley in the last 20 years. It did not start out promising however, with a severe spring frost that cut potential production in half. Our vineyard team did a wonderful job in directing the energy to the vines that produced a style that is complex and elegant. After a rigorous sorting, the vinification began in stainless-steel with further 8 months of aging in oak barrels from the finest forests in France (Tronçais, Bertranges & Limousin).
Press Notes :
This vintage has yet to be reviewed. Winery Notes – “The bouquet is marked by Morello cherry, violet, wood notes and with aging it develops aromas of game, truffle and cherries in brandy. On the palate, it reveals good roundness and a light, pleasant astringency (tannins from the grapes as well as the oak barrels) assuring good aging for 8 to 10 years."
