The vineyards (majuelos) for this wine are planted in three different soil types (clay, stone and chalk), which add layers of complexity and structure. We harvest by hand, selecting the best clusters that represent the style and intensity that is classic for Malleolus. Once the winemaking begins, the Tinto Fino grapes are macerated on the skins for 18 days, extracting their rich, cherry red color and further refined tannins. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months before bottling, allowed to rest before its eventual release.
The 2019 vintage is cherry red, loyal to the classic style for this wine. The nose is incredibly intense with floral aromatics, red fruit and subtle nuances of barrel aging. As the wine warms up in the glass, further spice and resinous notes develop, leading to a flavor structure that is ripe and bold, yet also elegant. When cellared properly, this 100% Tinto Fino can easily age for 10 years or more and develop additional nuance and complexity.
The 2019 vintage is yet to be released, nor rated. Please find this review of the 2018 vintage.
Press Notes :
93 points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Malleolus showed very well. It's a juicy, ripe and generous old-vine Tempranillo fermented with their own strain of yeasts and matured in French oak barrels. It showcases the house style—ripe and, in this case, with neatly integrated but generous oak. The palate is medium to full-bodied, and the tannins are fine. There is good freshness in 2018. It was bottled in May 2020.” - Luis Gutiérrez
