Pinot Noir (or Nero here locally) has become one of our most exciting grape varieties over the last decade as increased temperatures during the growing season have allowed Pinot Noir to ripen more evenly and with concentration, while still maintaining its classic acidity and elegance. For Ludwig, we source grapes from two unique sites in Alto Adige, from both sides of the valley. One vineyard site faces east at an elevation of 400m, while the mirror vineyard site faces west at 580m. This blending of two very different sites gives this wine further texture and complexity to match its silky fruit character.

After hand-harvesting each vineyard site and sorting for the most beautiful Pinot Noir clusters, this wine sees partial fermentation in large Slavonian oak vats and also in stainless-steel tanks. It is then aged in French oak barriques for a further 16 months to add more intensity and structure to the final wine.

Wonderfully ripe yet refined, with outstanding persistence and grip, this is a fabulous vintage for our Pinot Noir. Enjoy this wine as an aperitif, first courses, or light main courses.

Press Notes :

2018 vintage – 92 points, Wine Advocate – “The Elena Walch 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Nero Ludwig is more closed, smoky and reductive than its peers, with notes of black slate and less primary fruit than others. However, the mouthfeel is very fresh and vibrant with lots of blue flower and a strong personality with muscle and brawn. I'm seeing uneven results with Pinot Nero from across the region in this vintage. You might try it with some liver pâté. Some 10,000 bottles were made.”– Monica Larner
