It was such a joy to produce my first vintage of a rosato wine from Aglianico with the 2020 vintage. With the intense stress and struggles of the year 2020, I felt it was time to produce a wine of fun to drink to happier times. This 100% Aglianico del Vulture comes from our vineyard positioned at the foot of Monte Vulture (an ancient extinct volcano), in the village of Barile – the heart of Aglianico production. For the production of our TITOLO Pink Edition, we have chosen our youngest vineyards with a vine age of 6-10 years to produce this fresh and vibrant wine.
The 2020 vintage was wonderful and quite normal, despite our challenges due to the pandemic. The cold winter supplied an optimal supply of water and cooler temperatures allowed the vineyard to repair itself from the intense previous vintage. The summer was hot yet the water reserves allowed the vines to produce still bright and beautiful fruit of balance and concentration, great acidity. We harvested the grapes for the Pink Edition first, in the first week of October. The grapes were hand-harvested and taken to the cellar for selection and sorting. They were de-stemmed and whole berries were placed into stainless steel for a short fermentation period to capture the vibrancy of the Aglianico. After the grapes were soft pressed, they further stabilized for 90 days before filtering and further 60 days of bottle aging.
This wine is intense and bright pink in color. The nose is classic Aglianico, yet with fruity aromas of strawberry and hints of citrus. I was quite excited the first time I tasted the final wine, as the layers of white flowers and juicy berries were fresh and crisp with a texture that is quite mineral from our volcanic soils. The finish is dry, savory and beautifully balanced. Only 926 bottles were produced in this first vintage.
