This very special bottling is the rarest wine that we produce, typically only available at our cellar door. Fifteen is a single vineyard expression of Shiraz that was planted in 1915 by the Helbig family in the district of Greenock. The vineyard had long been considered a jewel of the Barossa Valley for leading winemakers and we were fortunate to acquire the vineyard in late 2010. This vineyard is truly a remarkable site. Planted 105 years ago, the vineyard has probably only survived due to sitting at the bottom of a small basin up in the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley. This basin has allowed any free-draining water to fill the sandy loam soils with moisture through the winter months allowing good root and shoot growth and keeping the vineyard in relatively good health through each growing season as the temperatures rise and the rain dries up. It should be noted that our family has since re-named this wine as "Helbig 1915", honoring the family that planted this vineyard.
2013 was the first vintage that we produced this very special wine. In the Barossa, 2013 is remembered as the driest, earliest and quickest vintage in memory. These growing conditions led to very low yields and even further, deeper concentration in our wines. As the vineyard for Fifteen is incredibly old as is, there was even further focus on making sure that we were able to produce a wine in this vintage that was representative of the intensity and quality of this vineyard’s potential. It was a very small vintage, but with spectacular fruit. The wine was fermented in a large barrel (1500 liters) and left on skins in this closed vessel for about six weeks. The wine was then pressed and spent a couple of winters in some of our favorite French oak. Our first vintage produced only 1022 bottles, each numbered and signed by Cameron and Allister.
Unlike any other wine in our range, this is a wine of immense proportion and is super-rich, dark, and brooding. It is already a wine of complexity and has remarkable balance and structure that underpin the full-bodied berry, mocha, spice, and cedar flavors and is certain to cellar well into the long term.
“Sourced from a tiny single block of vineyard planted in 1915, the very deep garnet purple 2013 Fifteen Shiraz is a brand new 100% Shiraz wine aged in 100% new French oak. It opens to an incredible nose loaded with dark chocolate and crushed blueberries, plums, cloves, red meat, licorice, tar, and a whiff of incense. Big, powerful, and concentrated, it is built like a brick house and framed by firm, grainy tannins. It finishes quite long and earthy.” - 97+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
