Radici (roots) refers to our comprehensive and passionate research into rootstock, site selection and clones when crafting wines from our best vineyard sites. Although we have been producing Taurasi since 1928, it wasn’t until 1986 that we decided to bottle it under the name “Radici”, to emphasize our intensive study of the volcanic soils of our region.

The grapes for this wine, a 100% Aglianico, are sourced from our two estate vineyards in Montemarano and Mirabella Eclano. Montemarano is a historic site in the southernmost part of the DOCG that is renowned for Taurasi production. It has a south-east exposure and predominately clay and volcanic soils that contain vines on average of 20 years. The Mirabella Eclano estate (which is the source of our benchmark Naturalis Historia Taurasi) is more sandy in composition with plantings over 40 years old.

The grapes are manually harvested and are sorted at each of the vineyard sites before a final sort in the cellar before pressing. The wine is fermented in stainless steel with a long maceration to extract the flavors and tannins of Aglianico. Once fermentation is completed, the wine is aged in French oak barriques and Slavonian oak casks for 24 months, followed by a minimum of 24 months in bottle. This wine is firm and gripping, yet approachable in its youth, with cellaring potential of 50 years or more.

Press Notes:

93 points, James Suckling – “Complex already on the nose with blue and black fruit, as well as notes of nori, goudrons and spices, such as cinnamon and mace. Full-bodied with intense, almost steely fruit and mineral flavors and firm, medium-grain tannins. The quality is evident here. It’s just a bit rough at the moment and needs a couple of years to calm down and expand in all directions. Try from 2023.”
