90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot & Petit Verdot

Lupicaia is sourced from our estate vineyards that are rich in minerals with the presence of tiny stones and a variety of fossils. This allows the vines to search easier for water in the dry, nutrient-deficient soils of this area. The vines are planted with the perfect inclination to the Mediterranean Sea -- a unique reflection of the sun and the coastal breeze combine to create perfect ripening and freshness in the clusters. We select the grapes for Lupicaia from the best vineyards on our estate, always creating the most intense, concentrated and ageable wine possible with each vintage.

As you may have heard, 2015 was a perfect growing season in Tuscany: it rained when it needed to rain, the summer wasn’t too hot, and at harvest the grapes were perfectly mature. We harvest all of our grapes by hand, sorting and selecting the best clusters in the vineyard and then sorting again upon arrival to the cellar. The grapes were gently de-stemmed and pressed carefully in order not to break the skins of the berries, avoiding harsh tannins. Fermentation occurred in open-top stainless-steel vats to capture the vibrancy of each variety, with a 20-day maceration period. We also completed daily déstage to extract the beautiful aromatic bouquet in balance with the tannins – all important for long aging. Finally, the wine is aged in new French oak tonneaux for approximately 22 months before refinement and bottling.

Overall our team is incredibly excited about this vintage, one of our best ever produced. Already, the Lupicaia has integrated into a spectacular wine and we see great potential in further aging.

Press Notes:

96 points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker Wine Advocate – “In the 2015 Lupicaia, the percentage of Petit Verdot used in the blend was reduced slightly in favor of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This vintage is beautiful, generous and full. Aged for 18 to 24 months in new French oak, there are some lovely balsamic notes in here but not too much wood. The wine flows forth with abundant dark fruit, black cherry and spice. This is a great effort from Castello del Terriccio.”
