Canalcchio di Sopra was one of the first producers in Montalcino to designate single-vineyard wines, including their new icon – La Casaccia. Where that wine is about a single site, this Brunello ‘Classico’ is a wine that best represents the overall quality of the vintage. This bottling is a shining example of just how exceptional the 2016 vintage was in Montalcino.
This vintage combines the two estate crus of Montosoli and Canalicchio in a wine that is incredibly balanced and bold. It has pronounced, ultra-fine tannins throughout the wine, combining notes of red berry and cedar with undertones of chocolate and plum. It is a vintage that is full, yet reserved. You will find this Brunello to already be incredibly polished, and one that has potential in the cellar to gain complexity for many, many years.
95 points, Eric Guido, Vinous Media – “The 2016 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino is flat-out stunning, remarkably vibrant and an almost-ethereal expression. There’s an exotic citrusy tinge to its ripe black cherries, taking on hints of sage, cedar and allspice, all grounded by moist earth tones. It’s focused and remarkably pure with a noticeable inner sweetness to the red and hints of blackberry fruit, all cast across a silky, feminine frame. The structure builds like a crescendo, as minerals fade to youthful tannins. Juicy acids maintain perfect balance from start to finish, making for a surprisingly fresh expression yet with amazing length. There’s simply so much going on here, and there are promises of more good things to come..”
