The Satèn (silk) style of Franciacorta was created with the goal of recreating Italian satin in wine form—a nod to the industry that has helped shape the history of winemaking in Northern Italy. Satèn is a very unique style as it is one of the softest, silkiest styles of sparkling wine produced in the world. Satèn is a Blanc de Blancs produced in the same Metodo Ca’ del Bosco as our other cuvées. 2016 is a blend of 85% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Bianco. Each vineyard source (14 Chardonnay and 2 Pinot Bianco) is vinified separately and barrel matured for 5 months before being tank matured for an additional 7 months. The 18 different base wines are then blended together to create the final cuvée. The wine then is aged and matured on lees for at least 48 months before a dosage of 0.5g/L.
The intention of Satèn is to create a cuvée that is smooth, luxurious, ripe, soft, rounded. It evokes the enchanting sensuality of the woman of one's heart. One of those wines that thrill the senses. Satèn, with the femininity and elegance of silk, is a special interpretation of a Franciacorta: a felicitous marriage of white grapes only. And a little secret: during tirage when sugars and yeasts are added to initiate second fermentation in the bottle, Satèn is given less sugar. The minimal dosage and slightly lower atmospheric pressure create the elegant Satèn style of a creamy, softer, silky wine. Finally, lengthy refinement enhances gentle elegance in every single bottle. Delicious as an aperitif and excellent as a conversation wine.
The 2016 vintage has not been released, nor reviewed. Please find this review of the latest vintage – 2015 – with comments from Kerin O’Keefe of Wine Enthusiast Magazine: “A blend of 85% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Bianco, this polished sparkler offers heady aromas evoking field flower, white stone fruit and a whiff of baked bread. Mirroring the nose, the creamy palate doles out yellow apple, white peach, baking spice and pastry dough alongside a silky perlage before a candied lemon-drop close. Fresh acidity brightens the rich flavors.” – 94 points
