This wine is a single-vineyard, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from our San Giovanni vineyard made only in select vintages when the conditions are perfect. This is a spectacular site for Cabernet as it sits on a southeastern exposure at over 320 meters – giving both ample sun and great soil drainage for concentration. The soils here are composed of the iconic Chianti Classico tufa – a type of limestone – that adds beautiful minerality and brightness to the final wine.

LEGIT 2018, now in its third vintage, was born in the vineyard. This year was a spectacular vintage across Chianti Classico, with a growing season that was long, mild and quite warm, all perfect for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. We spent a lot of time in the San Giovanni vineyard focusing on the best clusters of Cabernet, performing a rigorous process of vineyard management to divert the energy of the vines towards the most healthy fruit. The season ended warm as harvest arrived, giving final development of tannins and increased fruit concentration before picking. We hand-harvested and sorted the clusters in the vineyard before a secondary sorting in the cellar. The whole berries then went into French oak fermenters for a long, slow, 30-day maceration period. Once pressed, the wine went through secondary malolactic fermentation in French oak barriques and is then aged another 24 months in barrique to increase the rich, deep flavor profile of the wine.

The tannic structure, fruit density, and bright acidity of this wine make it powerful and bold upon release, and as we have seen from the past two vintages, LEGIT has long aging potential as well, as the tannins continue to integrate with the fruit, creating a supple silkiness and body.

Press Notes:

94 points, Wine Spectator – “Well-defined black cherry and blackberry flavors are shaded by notes of rosemary, eucalyptus, iron and tobacco in this firm and complex red, which shows lovely balance and grip on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2036.” – Bruce Sanderson
